10 Stories - The Chef Who Used His Noodle :: Review by Don
ReviewYou know, it's been 15 years since Uematsu's first solo album, Phantasmagoria, and I rather enjoyed it. Fortunately, he is producing his second solo album this year, entitled 10 Stories. Hints so far are that the album will be fun and varied one dedicated to telling some children's stories. Uematsu's third single from the upcoming album is entitled "The Chef Who Used His Noodle" and was released through iTunes on October 31, 2009. It differs greatly from his previous singles. Rather than going for the playful styles heard in "Here Come Conga Boy" and "Coconut Castaway," Uematsu opts for a rather poignant theme. Compared to the other songs released thus far, how does this one turn out? The music behind this theme is quite beautiful. The single, this time, transports us to Japan and therefore provides a very strong Asian flair. The strings work here is what absolutely astounds me. At times, it is used as a very lighthearted accompaniment, yet at others, it takes on a more poignant touch. The shakuhachi accents and dulcimer accompaniments really help accentuate this feeling of Asia. Overall, this theme is very beautiful and really contrasts nicely with the other singles released thus far. The focus of 10 Stories isn't going to be extremely catchy music in entirety after all. With "The Chef Who Used His Noodle," Uematsu treats us to a more sentimental theme. I'm looking forward to seeing what other styles are represented on the final album. I wonder what's in store for the next single, but you can be sure I'll be there to cover it! Overall Score: 8/10 |
