Biography
Since the first time I played on a video game, back when the Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo were the primary consoles on the market, I began to like the distinct sound of video game music, but it wasn't until I played Final Fantasy VII that my interest developed further. I remember enjoying the catchy music to the Sonic games, but Uematsu's score blew me away and after experiencing games where his talent shined even more, I decided to pursue the Final Fantasy soundtracks.
By complete coincidence, I stumbled upon the Square Enix Music Online's predecessor and found its user-friendly interface to be just what I needed to go about learning more of the world of video game music. After using the information on the main page for a couple of months, I signed up to Square Enix Music Online's forum community and have, consequently, discovered more about the subject than I ever would have otherwise. Full of helpful, knowledgeable people, the forums have heightened my interest and appreciation of music as a whole and I have discovered composers who I rank before Uematsu, who I had never heard of before coming to this site. Part of the reason for this is because in the UK we receive far less RPG's than those in Japan and America as Role-playing is considered a minority sector of the video game market. Through Square Enix Music Online, however, I have been able to broaden my horizons and I'm only too happy to be able to play a more active role on the site that has helped me so much.
On the subject of 'my own music' briefly, I'm strictly limited to keyboard composition at this current stage, having not yet got to grips with sequencing and my copy of Gigastudio 3 Orchestra. Having not received any classical training, I remain fairly secretive in displaying my work, mainly because I would like to wait until I have something of a sufficient musical sophistication to show; I have yet to pluck up the courage to post any samples on the forums, in fact! I am, however, composing the music for an online internet game, so while I doubt it will become a serious career option, I will retain the hobby; after all, I can't imagine life without music anymore. At this point, I am not certain whether to pursue a career in the Art, Literature or I.T field; I'm keeping my options open, although I know that eventually I'll have to head down a single road.
