Nippon Ichi Software is a video game developer founded in 1993. It initially focused on producing puzzle games, but switched its focus in 1998 with the development of the innovative musical RPG Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. On this title and its subsequent sequels and spinoffs, Tenpei Sato produced innovative and humorous scores combining vocal themes with instrumental tracks.
In recent years, Nippon Ichi Software has focused on producing tactical RPGs for the Disgaea series and La Pucelle: Tactics, Phantom Brave, and Soul Nomad. These titles have been well-received internationally and their scores by Sato have been critically acclaimed. Other productions include the Hariyagami horror series and Makai Kingdom principally composed by Ryo Sakai.
Nippon Ichi Software has also expanded to become an international company with the subsidiary NIS America. This has resulted in the localisation of many of their titles. In addition, they have published works developed by other companies such as Vanillaware (Grim Grimoire), Hit Maker (Blade Dancer), Idea Factory (Generation of Chaos), Gust (Atelier Iris series), and console ports of Kogado Studio titles.
